First Lady Presents Preah Vossa Candles and Gifts to Monks at Wat Mony Sovann

PHNOM PENH: On Thursday afternoon, 14 July, First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen, along with accompanying leaders and officials of the Cambodian Red Cross, brought Preah Vossa candles and donated many other items to the monks staying at Wat Mony Sovann in Sangkat Prek Thmey, Khan Chbar Ampov, Phnom Penh, during the rainy season.

The beginning of Buddhist Lent, known has Preah Vossa, is held every year from the first day of the month of Assard (according to the Khmer Buddhist calendar), to the 15th day of the month of Assoch. The ceremony started on the first full moon of the month of Assard, with the participation of elders living near the pagoda, the procession of candles, robes and other paraphernalia, a procession around the temple, and then a sermon and the offering of candles to the monks.

Before the arrival of the beginning of Buddhist Lent, Khmer Buddhists who have a strong belief in Buddhism bring Vossa candles and other offerings to the monks who will stay in pagodas the whole rainy season without ritual of seeking alms every morning.

First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen is someone who has a strong belief in Buddhism and always brings candles and gifts to the monks in the temples every year. The ceremony of offering Preah Vossa candles and offering gifts was made according to the Khmer Buddhist scriptures.
